Do you have periods in a year where your time is fully booked and then you have periods where all you hear is crickets and no one is hiring you? This is one of the biggest issues that creatives have when it comes to running a business.
One of the biggest mistakes we make as a creative is relying on a single stream of income, especially if that income is largely dependent on client work.
It makes you at the mercy of the market, living from project to project, not knowing when your next paycheck is coming and, unprepared for crises or situations you can’t control. A mistake I learned not too long ago. So listen up because this will save you a lot of heartache and uncertainty in your business.
It’s our first episode of the year and I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. We celebrated our first Christmas in our new home just spending time with the kids. We didn’t have a big celebration. It was simple. We watched The Princess Switch and the girls loved it. Alphonse, on the other hand, was busy playing on the deck. We basically just took a break and rest. Slept early and that was it. Simple celebrations can be fun too!
We have so many things to be grateful for despite everything and most especially I’m grateful for you, my dear listeners. I wouldn’t have achieved everything I have now without your support. Likewise, I’m thankful that you turn to me for help, advice and ask for tips because when you share them with me, it allows me to help you even better by creating content, products and programs that truly serve your needs.
And because of that, I want to start this year strong by highlighting one thing that many creatives are struggling with – Inconsistent income. I know there are periods in your business where you have more client work than you can handle and then there are times when you have nothing in sight for the next few months. It’s natural for a business to have its ups and downs but if you’re a one-man show, cash flow will be tight and you’ll find yourself questioning your decisions to be an entrepreneur.
